Lafz

Everything you need to know to get the most out of Lafz — from your first flashcard to your hundredth-day streak.

1. Getting Started

When you first open Lafz, you'll see a brief splash with the version number, then the Home tab. There's nothing to set up — you can study immediately.

Across the bottom of the screen, the tab bar has four sections:

• Home — your streak, today's session, and recently learned words.
• Study — the flashcard review screen.
• Library — the full word list, organized by letter, with search.
• Profile — your name, stats, settings, and the leaderboard.

2. Studying with Flashcards

The Study tab is where the learning happens.

1. Tap Study on the tab bar.
2. A flashcard appears with a word and its part of speech.
3. Tap the speaker icon to hear the word pronounced.
4. Tap anywhere on the card to flip it and reveal: the definition, synonyms, and an example sentence.
5. Decide how well you remembered:
   • Tap "Again" (red outline) if you didn't know it — Lafz shows it again soon.
   • Tap "Got it" (green) if you knew it — Lafz schedules it further in the future.

How many words per session?

When you finish the day's session, Lafz shows an "All caught up" screen until the next review is due.

3. The Home Screen

The dark streak card near the top of Home shows:

• 🔥 Streak — number of consecutive days you've studied at least one word.
• ❄️ Streak Saver — the snowflake icon with a number tells you how many freeze days you have. See Streak Saver.
• Mastered count — words you've reviewed successfully, against the total available in your pack.

Below that, the "Today's Session" card shows how many words are due and how long it'll take. Tap to jump into Study.

The "Recently learned" section lists your most recent reviewed words with checkmarks. Tap See all to jump to Library.

4. The Library

The Library tab is the full word list, organized by letter.

• Search bar — type a word, definition, or synonym. Filters in real time.
• Letter grid — tap a letter to browse all words starting with that letter.
• Locked letters (faded with a 🔒) — part of the paid pack. Tap to see upgrade options.

5. Picking a Test Pack

Lafz ships with all six exam packs live — 4,800+ word entries across SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, and IELTS.

To switch packs:

1. Go to Profile → Test.
2. Pick a pack from the list.

When you switch packs, your streak, freezes, and global mastery count carry across — but the word list and the FSRS review queue reset to that pack.

6. Customizing Your Study

In Profile → Settings:

• Daily reminder — pick a time of day. Lafz sends a local push when it's time to study. Default 7:00 PM.
• Daily goal — words per session (1–50). Default 5.
• Pronunciation audio — toggle text-to-speech on/off.
• Leaderboard — opens Game Center. See Leaderboards.
• Restore purchases — recover an earlier purchase on a new device.
• Help & feedback — opens an email draft to support.

The avatar card at the top of Profile shows your name (tap to edit) and your current plan.

The free tier covers letters A–C and 5 words per session.

8. Streak Saver

You get one freeze per ISO week, automatically. If you miss a day of study, the freeze is spent and your streak continues uninterrupted. If you have zero freezes and miss a day, the streak resets to 0.

The current freeze count shows on the Home streak card next to the streak number, as a snowflake ❄️ pill.

9. Multi-device & iCloud Sync

If you're signed into iCloud on your devices, Lafz syncs automatically:

• Your streak and Streak Saver freezes
• Words you've mastered
• FSRS review state (so a word reviewed on iPad won't reappear immediately on iPhone)
• Profile preferences (name, daily goal, reminder time, audio toggle)
• Active test pack

Sync happens when the app moves to the background and when your device receives an update from iCloud. There is no separate Lafz login.

10. Game Center & Leaderboards

If you're signed into Game Center, Lafz reports:

Achievements

Open the leaderboard from Profile → Leaderboard. Swipe inside Game Center's sheet to switch between boards.

1v1 Quiz Duels

Lafz supports real-time 1v1 quiz matches over Game Center. Both players race through the same five questions on their own phones; whoever scores the most points wins, with a tie broken by total elapsed time.

Open Profile → 1v1 Quiz to start a match. Game Center's matchmaker handles both auto-matching against a random opponent and the Send Invite button to challenge a specific friend — pick whichever you want from the same screen.

Matchmaking is scoped to your active pack: SAT users only match with SAT users, GRE only with GRE, etc. Scoring is 100 points per correct answer plus a speed bonus that decays from a 5-second cap. After the result screen you can tap Play Again to start a fresh round with the same opponent.

Free users can play 5 duels per session with one short interstitial ad after each result screen. Premium subscribers get unlimited matches and no ads.

11. Lock Screen Widget

The Lafz widget is available on the iOS Lock Screen and Home Screen. It shows:

• Your current streak
• Today's due-word count
• The "word of the day" — a stable pick from your active pack that doesn't change until tomorrow
• A short definition snippet

To add it: long-press the Lock Screen → Customize → tap a widget slot → choose Lafz. Five sizes are available:

• Inline — one line above the clock
• Circular — streak badge
• Rectangular — word + definition snippet
• Small / Medium — Home Screen widgets with full layout

12. Frequently Asked Questions

I missed a day, but my streak didn't reset. Why?

Streak Saver. You get one freeze per ISO week; it's spent automatically. Check the snowflake count on the Home streak card.

Can I study offline?

Yes. All vocabulary is bundled with the app. Notifications and iCloud sync require connectivity.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

Progress data syncs through Apple's iCloud Key-Value Store using your Apple ID. Lafz does not run its own backend that stores user data. See the Privacy Policy for details.

What spaced-repetition algorithm does Lafz use?

FSRS-5 (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) — same family as the algorithm Anki ships. It adapts to your individual difficulty and forgetting curve.

Can I import my own word list?

Not in v1. If this matters to you, send a feedback note via Profile → Help & feedback.

How do I cancel a subscription?

iOS Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → Lafz → Cancel.

Family Sharing — what's included?

Lifetime ($49.99) is Family-Shareable. Up to five family members get full access. Subscriptions (monthly/annual) are per-Apple-ID.
